Lagos, Nigeria (CNN)The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) has been signed by 44 African countries at a summit of the African Union in Kigali, Rwanda. 10 of the African Union's (AU) 55 member states did not sign the agreement. The African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) aims to unite 1.3 billion people, creating a $3.4 trillion economic bloc that could usher in a new era of development. Rwandan President Paul Kagame, chairman of the African Union, signs the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement in Kigali, Rwanda, on March 21. As of last week, there is a new global trade player, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) entered into force on 30 May 2019 for the 24 countries that had deposited their instruments of ratification. This date marked 30 days after 22 countries had deposited their ratification instruments with the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson – the designated depositary for this purpose, as stipulated in Article 23 of the Agreement.
